Acne is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Some of the characteristics of acne include black heads, pimples, cysts, infected abscesses, and rarely scarring. All in all, the formation of acne pimples a pretty complicated process that even scientists and dermatologists don’t fully understand. What is known though, can be summed up in a fairly simple manner – Acne bacteria (p. acnes) get trapped inside a pore (hair follicle). The bacteria then feed upon the sebum (oil) trapped inside the pore, and multiply, causing an infection.

There are many types of acne, but the most common form occurs during the teenage years when young adults experience a dramatic increase in hormone levels. These hormones signal the skin glands to produce more oil. When this oil mixes with dead cells, it can clog pores in the skin and trap bacteria as well. The result is often a raised tissue area characterized by swelling, redness, and pus. These bumps are also known as “pimples,” the symptom most commonly associated with acne.

The common symptoms of acne include persistent, recurrent red spots or swellings on the skin known as pimples. The pimples become inflamed and get filled with pus. The pimples usually occur on the face, chest, shoulders, neck, or upper portion of the back. Some of the other symptoms include dark spots with open pores at the center, which are known as blackheads, bulged spots under the skin without openings, which are known as whiteheads, and red swellings or lumps filled with pus, which are known as pustules.

Acne or pimples affects almost everybody. Though most pimples heal without leaving any scar, some severe acne leave scars, pits, uneven skin on healing. As pimples mostly affect face, scars and pits look unsightly. Although not life threatening, acne can cause depression and low self esteem. There are many acne scar treatments available to people now.

Most teenagers and young adults have encountered, or will encounter acne. Although this tends to be a part of growing, acne scars sometimes result from this skin condition. Acne scars can, and in many instances do, have worse effects on individuals than the acne itself- the acne scars may travel with the individual throughout the rest of their lives.

Acne scars are largely classified in to two categories: Raise scars and depressed scars. Raised scars or hypertrophic scars are excess skin mass left behind on the skin surface after the acne has healed. These scars are often mistaken for acne and people often wait for the acne to heal on its own. The fact is these scars will not go away for many years to come.

Acne victimizes an estimated 99% of people - mostly teenagers and young adults - at some point in their lives. Acne is temporary, lasting from a few months to a few years, early treatment is compulsory to prevent scarring and dispigmentation, which, untreated, can persevere for life.

It’s important to understand that there are different types of acne scarring and depending on the type you are afflicted with your treatment choices will differ. It’s also important to note that most people with acne scarring have a mix of two or more different types, and when this is combined with your own unique physiology and skin type it makes selecting the right treatment that much more difficult.

How to get rid of acne scars is relatively a more important question rather than how to remove acne as the acne comes and goes away earlier if treated but sooner or later even if left untreated. Now what about scars? They are not ready to leave their residence which is our skin at any cost. They seem to be more stubborn and subtle.

Acne scars are ugly, and it is unfortunate if the person has it on their face. Some acne does leave miserable scars on the face and body, but luckily there is treatment for these types of scars. It is essential that a person being treated for the acne scars does not have active acne anywhere else on the face. Acne scars might occur if you keep pinching the acne on your face and try to break it or squeeze it out.

Acne scars, unlike post-acne redness and pigmentation, are permanent. Depressed acne scars are the most common acne scars seem. These acne scars varies in appearance and depth. Basically these acne scars can be classified as ice-pick scars, box-car scars and rolling scars. Usually people with acne scars will display a combination of all the different type of acne scars. Treating of acne scars early and effectively is to prevent permanent scarring.

Boxcar scars are angular in share, and can be deep. They usually occur on the cheeks and the temple. These scars are often mistaken for scars caused by chickenpox. Rolling scars make the skin look wave-like. Ice-pick scars, on the other hand, causes the skin to have deep pits, and are most common. Hypertrophic scars are in general thicker than the other types of scars. They are often caused by the more severe cases of acne.
